China approves standard for AI-powered neural interfaces — ECNS

In China, the National Medical Products Administration has approved a standard for brain-computer interface devices that use artificial intelligence to process brainwave data. As ECNS reports, this is the world’s first standard for products of this type.

Data requirements

The standard will take effect on September 1, 2027. It defines technical requirements and testing methods for the entire data lifecycle: collection, processing, labeling, storage and provision of access.

The document is intended to eliminate problems involving inconsistent dataset quality and non-standardized development procedures. It was approved under an accelerated procedure.

Algorithm training

According to officials, large volumes of brainwave data are needed to train artificial intelligence algorithms that must accurately interpret patients’ intentions. Therefore, the quality of this data is critical for treatment outcomes and safety.

According to ECNS, the new standard establishes a unified benchmark for brainwave datasets, supports innovation and meets the international advanced level.
