China completes formation of 19-satellite constellation for 3D mapping
Chinese commercial space company Chang Guang Satellite Technology Co., Ltd. has completed the formation of a satellite constellation of 19 spacecraft for three-dimensional mapping. The company said it is the world's largest system of this type, ECNS reports.
Imaging from multiple angles
The constellation enables remote-sensing satellites to collect three-dimensional spatial information in addition to conventional two-dimensional images. The system supports stereo imaging by a single satellite, a pair of satellites, or multiple spacecraft from different angles.
According to the company, two satellites in formation can capture a strip up to 1,600 kilometers long in a single operation. One stereo-imaging session can cover an area of more than 20,000 square kilometers.

Terrain and urban development models
Multi-angle imaging can reduce obstructions caused by buildings and terrain and enable the creation of more complete three-dimensional models. Chang Guang Satellite Technology has developed products with high-precision 3D data, including digital surface models, digital terrain models, and realistic three-dimensional models.
Such data can be used for urban planning, natural resource surveys, infrastructure monitoring, and assessing the consequences of natural disasters, especially in areas difficult to access for drones or ground teams. The company also plans to further expand the constellation and improve the speed and accuracy of data updates.
