Chinese robot Lightning posts a faster 100m time than Bolt’s record
Chinese humanoid robot Lightning covered the 100-meter distance in 9.32 seconds during a training run in Beijing, Chinese media reported. This is 0.26 seconds faster than the 9.58-second result with which Jamaican athlete Usain Bolt set the world record at the World Athletics Championships in Berlin in 2009.
Run ahead of robot competitions
Deutsche Welle English reported on the robot’s result, citing Chinese media. Lightning’s run was held ahead of the second World Humanoid Robot Games, which opened in Beijing. At the competition, technology companies, mostly Chinese ones, and university teams demonstrate robots’ capabilities in performing various tasks.
Lightning was developed by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer Honor. According to the publication, the robot also won the Beijing half marathon over a distance of 21 kilometers in April.

The robot’s legs were lengthened
During the half marathon, Lightning was 169 centimeters tall, and its legs were 95 centimeters long. Ahead of the World Humanoid Robot Games, the robot’s legs were lengthened by 10 centimeters, to 1.05 meters, China Central Television reported.
Deutsche Welle notes that just a year ago, the best humanoid robots had difficulty even finishing races.
