OpenAI calls for mandatory nationwide AI safety requirements in the US

In the United States, OpenAI said it supports the introduction of mandatory nationwide requirements for artificial intelligence safety. The developer of ChatGPT also said it would support legislative initiatives in individual states until the US Congress makes relevant decisions at the federal level.

Initiatives in California

As Channel NewsAsia reports, citing Reuters, OpenAI announced its support for four bills in California on September 9. The company outlined its position in a blog post.

These include SB 813, which concerns general infrastructure for independent safety evaluations, and AB 1405 on standards for auditors of artificial intelligence systems.

Youth protection and biosafety

OpenAI also supported SB 1119, a bill on protecting young people. Another document, AB 1864, provides for safeguards against biological threats associated with the use of artificial intelligence.
