Panasonic Energy in Japan develops solid-state battery operating up to 150°C
In Chiba, Japan, Panasonic Energy has developed a solid-state battery capable of operating at temperatures of up to 150 degrees Celsius. The company is expected to begin shipping samples between October and December, its chief technology officer Shoichiro Watanabe said.
Higher operating temperature
The battery unit of Panasonic Holdings has raised the maximum operating temperature of solid-state batteries from 125 to 150 degrees Celsius. The company has also developed a new compact prismatic cell design.
As Channel NewsAsia reports, Watanabe said the prismatic format simplifies product layouts compared with coin-shaped cells. Higher heat resistance, he said, could expand the use of such batteries, including for sterilizing medical equipment.

Initial areas of application
Initially, Panasonic Energy is targeting not electric vehicles but industrial equipment and automotive sensors. The company expects to begin mass production one to two years after shipping samples.
In addition, Panasonic Energy intends to accelerate the development of cylindrical batteries for humanoid robots. Watanabe noted that cylindrical batteries are suitable for such robots because they can be placed in confined spaces and rounded structures.
