Spotify will label songs generated by AI

Spotify Technologies SA will introduce an “AI Personas” label for songs generated by artificial intelligence. The company wants to enable users to distinguish music by real artists from artificially created tracks, Fortune reports, citing Bloomberg.

The streaming service will not recommend tracks labeled “AI Personas” in suggested playlists unless a subscriber specifically chooses to receive such recommendations.

Starting August 11, artists will be able to indicate on their own that their works were generated by AI. The labels on tracks are expected to begin appearing in mid-September.

Users will also be able to flag tracks that they believe were generated by artificial intelligence. Artists whose tracks were mistakenly labeled as AI-generated will have the opportunity to appeal the decision.

Spotify stated that listeners don’t like it when an artist’s profile appears to be human, only to later discover that the person was created by AI. Last year, the fake band Velvet Sundown sparked a debate about transparency in the music industry: streams of their music surged, and the creators circulated AI-generated images of fictional musicians.

The company is also rolling out other AI-related products, including AI Credits. This tool allows artists to specify exactly how they used artificial intelligence in their work.
