Gemini reached 1 billion monthly users, while ChatGPT reached 1 billion weekly users in July
Google's Gemini chatbot has reached 1 billion monthly active users. Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced this on the social media platform X, calling Gemini the company's fastest-growing product. This is Google’s 14th product to reach an audience of 1 billion users, according to The Verge.
OpenAI has also reported that ChatGPT is used by over 1 billion people. Company spokesperson Lindsey McCallum told The Verge that the service had previously surpassed 1 billion monthly users, and in July, its weekly user count reached 1 billion. At the same time, OpenAI has not disclosed the current number of monthly ChatGPT users.
It is difficult to compare these figures directly, as Google publishes data on Gemini’s monthly audience, while OpenAI reports on ChatGPT’s weekly audience. In February, OpenAI reported 900 million weekly active users for ChatGPT. In February, Google estimated Gemini’s monthly audience at 750 million, and by the end of July, at 950 million. According to Google spokesperson Alex Joseph, the service reached the 1-billion mark last week.

As noted by The Verge, the figures cited by Google likely refer specifically to the Gemini app and do not include all integrations of the model into the company’s other products. At the same time, Gemini, which comes pre-installed on Android smartphones, appears to be included in the count. Gemini head Josh Woodward reported that the app has over 100 million active users on iOS.
According to the publication’s assessment, ChatGPT currently remains the larger platform, but Gemini may be growing faster. Anthropic does not publish audience data for Claude, although external estimates suggest the service has tens of millions of users.
