OpenAI has launched a standalone ChatGPT desktop app for Linux. A preview version of the app became available worldwide on Tuesday, August 11, 2026, according to TechCrunch.
The new app allows Linux users to use ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex. OpenAI stated that Linux was one of the platforms for which users most frequently requested a desktop version. According to the company, the launch extends ChatGPT and Codex to all major desktop operating systems.

OpenAI announced that it will support the desktop versions of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, as well as Fedora 43 and 44. These distributions serve as the basis for a number of Linux derivatives, which may also be compatible with OpenAI applications.
Anthropic released the Claude desktop app for Linux about a month ago. It is available for Ubuntu 22.04 or later and Debian 12 or later.
