An autonomous artificial intelligence-based monitoring system has been deployed at remote well-drilling sites for coalbed methane extraction in China’s Shanxi Province. It operates without access to the external internet and is designed to monitor safety at facilities with weak connectivity.

Local data processing

The system was developed by the Third Geological Exploration Team of the Shandong Coalfield Geological Bureau together with partners, ECNS reports. The technology locally analyzes video and behavioral data without sending large video streams to cloud services. When a connection is available, it can send brief alerts to managers.

At a drilling project in the Qinshui Basin, the system provides round-the-clock monitoring and real-time voice alerts. According to the team, emergency response time has been reduced from hours to minutes, while the efficiency of hazard inspections has increased by 80%.

Equipment and drilling

The system also tracks equipment condition and drilling parameters. At one coalbed methane extraction project in Shanxi, its use, according to the team, helped save about 25 drilling hours. The cycle duration was reduced from 12 to nine days, while total costs fell by 5–12%.

According to ECNS, the technology has already been deployed at four coalbed methane extraction projects in Shanxi Province.
