New York Plans to Replace Radiologists with Artificial Intelligence — Radiology Business
The leadership of the NYC Health + Hospitals network is considering a large-scale rollout of artificial intelligence for interpreting medical images.
This is reported by Radiology Business.
Company President Mitchell G. Katz stated his readiness to begin replacing specialists with technology as soon as the legislation is adapted.
Mitchell G. Katz heads a system of 11 hospitals in New York and considers this step necessary. During a panel discussion at Crain’s New York Business, he noted that AI demonstrates high effectiveness in analyzing mammograms.
“We could replace a significant number of radiologists with artificial intelligence right now if we are ready to take on the regulatory challenge,” Katz emphasized.
The services of qualified radiologists are becoming increasingly expensive for hospital budgets. Using technology for the initial analysis of images will help “significantly save” taxpayer money.
According to Katz’s plan, doctors should be involved only to review complex cases and abnormal results. This will make breast cancer screening more accessible to the general public.
David Lubarsky, CEO of Westchester Medical Center Health Network, supported his colleague and shared his successful experience.
His network is already actively using algorithms that produce results better than those of humans.
“For women who are not considered high-risk, if the test comes back negative, it is wrong only in about 3 out of 10,000 cases,” Lyubarsky said.
