The updated Mamay AI chatbot was unveiled in Ukraine
The Institute of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence (INSAIT) has unveiled an updated version of the Ukrainian language model MamayLM v2.0 and the free Mamay AI chatbot. The developers claim improved performance and better support for the Ukrainian language, but certain technical issues were identified during testing of the service.
A new Ukrainian AI model has been released
The new family of models is built on Google’s Gemma 3 architecture and is available in versions with 12 and 27 billion parameters. According to the developers, the MamayLM 27B model is currently the largest language model adapted for the Ukrainian language. When creating the new version, the team took into account user feedback on the first generation of the model and applied new tuning methods designed to improve performance in Ukrainian.
Along with the model update, the public Mamay AI chatbot has gone live. The service supports text, images, and audio, features built-in web search, a step-by-step reasoning function, and the ability to analyze large documents. The platform runs on the INSAIT technology stack, which is also used for the national chatbot BgGPT in Bulgaria.
For Ukrainian organizations, the developers offer free local model hosting and direct API access upon request, which should simplify the integration of artificial intelligence into government and corporate services.
However, initial tests of Mamay AI revealed a number of shortcomings. During testing by journalists, the chatbot demonstrated issues with generating text in Ukrainian: it omitted individual letters and words, and similar errors occurred in English-language responses as well. Despite the claimed improvements, the quality of the service currently requires further refinement.
The first version of the Ukrainian-language MamayLM model was released in 2025. Since then, it has been downloaded over 54,000 times, and the technology itself has been integrated into a number of commercial and non-commercial IT projects.
