Wikipedia will not allow artificial intelligence to edit articles due to the risk of errors
The online encyclopedia “Wikipedia” has no plans to allow artificial intelligence to edit articles on its own. The platform’s co-founder, Jimmy Wales, explained that modern AI models are still prone to so-called “hallucinations,” in which fabricated information is presented as fact.
At the same time, Wikipedia recognizes the value of artificial intelligence in assisting editors. In particular, AI can uncover little-known news stories and events that might otherwise go unnoticed by the community. However, the final editing and verification of information will remain the responsibility of human editors.
According to Wales, the number of human visits to Wikipedia has recently decreased by about 8%, while the activity of AI bots that use encyclopedia content to generate responses has increased significantly. He noted that this places an additional burden on the project’s servers and requires significant expenses.
The Wikipedia co-founder also called on companies developing artificial intelligence to make a fair contribution to supporting the resource. According to him, the Wikimedia Foundation has already entered into relevant agreements with a number of major technology companies.
