Meta’s Muse app takes second place in the US App Store

Meta’s new AI app Muse has taken second place in the US App Store rankings after receiving more than 83,000 iOS downloads in the United States. The app is currently available only on the US market, TechCrunch reports, citing data from analytics company Sensor Tower.

A slower start than Meta’s previous products

Despite its high position in the App Store, Muse’s debut was more modest than the launches of Meta’s other products. Threads was downloaded more than 4.3 million times in the United States on its release day, while the Meta AI app received 108,000 US downloads at launch.

Muse is also lagging behind ChatGPT’s launch pace. Less than a week after its launch, ChatGPT surpassed 500,000 installs in the United States, which at that time was its only market. According to TechCrunch’s calculation, ChatGPT’s average daily downloads at launch amounted to about 83,300 — Muse reached that number in approximately twice as long.

At the same time, Muse continued to climb the iOS rankings: on Wednesday, it was in fourth place in the US App Store before later moving up to second. On Android, the app has a significantly lower result: it ranked 338th in the “Productivity” category on Google Play. Data on the number of Android downloads are not yet available.

Betting on AI agents

Muse is also available through a web version and WhatsApp, but these access methods are not included in Sensor Tower’s estimates. Meta views AI agents capable of performing tasks on users’ behalf as one of the key areas of consumer artificial intelligence.

In this market, Meta competes, among others, with Google’s Gemini Spark, Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, and Instinct, an agent that operates through text messages. According to TechCrunch, Instinct was recently valued at $2.5 billion, while the service itself has $350 million at its disposal. It launched email addresses for all users, integrations with Stripe and 1Password, as well as a geolocation-sharing feature.

TechCrunch also notes that Muse launched several days after Meta agreed to settle a multistate lawsuit over consumer harm from social media for $18 billion. The publication indicates that the app requires users to provide Meta with additional personal information.
