Rising layoffs in the US tech sector in 2024

In the United States, layoffs in the tech sector have surged, with over 52,000 employees let go since the beginning of 2024. Bloomberg reported this information, citing data from Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc., a firm specializing in placing displaced workers.

According to Challenger, Gray & Christmas, tech companies announced 18,720 job cuts in March 2024, a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. The total number of layoffs in the first quarter was the highest since 2023.

Companies often attribute layoffs to the impact of artificial intelligence, but this is frequently a misconception. Netscape co-founder Marc Andreessen argues that AI is used as a "panacea to justify layoffs," which are actually caused by workforce overcapacity—ranging from 25% to 75% in some large organizations.

Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. is a US-based recruitment firm specializing in assisting employees displaced through large-scale corporate layoffs and analyzing labor market trends.

As a result, the trend of extensive layoffs in the US tech sector may continue as companies streamline their workforce in response to market challenges and internal restructuring.

Analysts predict further fluctuations in the IT job market in the near future, potentially reshaping employment structures and specialist requirements.
