On June 17, believers honor the martyrs Manuel, Savel, and Ismail: traditions and observances for the day

On June 17 according to the New Julian calendar, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine commemorates the holy martyrs Manuel, Savel, and Ismail, who suffered for the Christian faith in the 4th century.

According to church tradition, the brothers were envoys of the Persian king at the court of the Roman Emperor Julian the Apostate. They refused to participate in pagan rituals and openly professed Christianity, for which they were executed.

In the folk calendar, this day is known as Manuil and Savel. Our ancestors considered it one of the most difficult days of the year due to beliefs about fog, “darkness,” and the heightened activity of evil spirits. That is why people tried to avoid conflicts, loud entertainment, and rash actions.

At the same time, the day is considered auspicious for tidying up the home, cleaning, and getting rid of unnecessary items. According to folk beliefs, getting a haircut on this day symbolizes renewal and helps leave troubles behind.

The Church urges people to refrain from quarrels, envy, insults, gossip, and refusing to help those in need. People were also advised not to lend money, make empty promises, or argue with loved ones.

According to folk signs, an evening rainbow on June 17 portends a warm summer and good weather, while a crimson sunset foretells strong winds and bad weather.
