A 19-year-old man from Odesa set a restaurant on fire on someone's orders and filmed the crime on camera

In Odesa, law enforcement officers apprehended a 19-year-old resident of Kherson suspected of setting fire to a restaurant on Nebesna Sotnia Avenue. According to the investigation, the young man received the order via a messaging app and was to be paid for the crime.

The arson occurred in late May. That night, the young man smashed a window of the restaurant with a hammer, doused the premises with a flammable liquid, and set it on fire. He recorded the entire process with a head-mounted camera to send the video to the person who commissioned the crime.

During searches, police seized a hammer, a camera, a cell phone, and other physical evidence. The restaurant was virtually destroyed by the fire; the amount of damage is currently being determined.

The suspect is currently in custody. Police are also investigating his possible involvement in other similar crimes. It is known that the young man is already suspected of a number of serious and particularly serious crimes, including a high-profile murder on Fontanska Road in Odesa in late 2025.

In connection with the arson, he has been notified of his status as a suspect in the intentional destruction of another person’s property. The penalty under this article provides for up to 10 years of imprisonment.
