A 20-year-old Paralympian has resumed training after undergoing surgery in Lviv
In Lviv, surgeons at St. Panteleimon Hospital performed surgery on 20-year-old Seraphim Dragun, an athlete on Ukraine’s National Paralympic Team. For years, the athlete had suffered from varicose veins in his lower limbs, which caused pain, swelling, and cramps. After the minimally invasive surgery, he recovered quickly and has already returned to training.
Serafim Dragun is originally from Zakarpattia. In early childhood, he suffered a fracture of his left elbow, which caused the joint to become deformed. Despite this, Seraphim did not give up on sports. He tried his hand at various disciplines and eventually settled on para-biathlon and para-running.
By the age of 15, he had already made the Ukrainian National Paralympic Team. However, he had been suffering from varicose veins in his lower limbs since his teenage years. The problem was not merely cosmetic. It caused him pain, cramps, and swelling. Eventually, Seraphim decided to address the issue and sought treatment from doctors in Lviv. A colleague recommended that he consult with surgeons.
The surgery was performed using a minimally invasive technique
At St. Panteleimon Hospital, the athlete underwent surgery to correct varicose veins in his lower extremities. Gnat Gerych, head of Surgical Department No. 1, explained that while this was a standard procedure for the medical staff, it was of great importance to the athlete, as it enabled him to resume active training.
“We performed a routine procedure for us—correction of varicose veins in the lower extremities using a minimally invasive technique. Seraphim recovered quite quickly and is already returning to sports,” the doctor said. After the procedure, the athlete recovered quite quickly. He has now returned to training. This is particularly important for Serafim, as he is continuing his athletic career and preparing for new competitions as a member of Ukraine’s National Paralympic Team. This was reported by the hospital.
