On May 21, Ukrainians celebrate the Ascension of the Lord
Orthodox and Greek Catholic believers in Ukraine celebrate the Ascension of the Lord—one of the twelve major Christian holidays, which symbolizes the conclusion of Jesus Christ’s earthly ministry.
This day always falls on a Thursday, exactly forty days after Easter, and marks for Ukrainians the final transition from spring to the true warmth of summer.
According to the biblical account, after His Resurrection, the Son of God remained on earth for forty days, appearing to His disciples and teaching them the fundamentals of establishing the Kingdom of God.
On the fortieth day, in the presence of the apostles, he ascended into heaven from the Mount of Olives, opening the way to the spiritual world for humanity.
In remembrance of this event, believers traditionally turn to God with these special words: “God, Your Son ascended into heaven today in the presence of the apostles. Grant that we, in accordance with Your promise, may be deemed worthy of His presence with us on earth and of eternal life with Him in heaven. Who lives and reigns with You in the unity of the Holy Spirit, O God, for ever and ever. Amen.”
The central tradition of the holiday remains attending solemn services in churches, which are decorated with flowers and festive banners for the occasion.
After the liturgy, Ukrainians gather with their families for festive meals, visit relatives, confess their sins, and ask the Lord for health and well-being.
In folk tradition, people used to bake special ritual cookies shaped like ladders “so that Jesus would have something to climb up to heaven on,” and they also made pancakes from millet flour.
Peasants would always walk through their fields and roll Easter eggs on the crops, as it was believed that this was the time when the ears of grain began to sprout.
