Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the UN called for Russia to be stripped of its permanent member status
During a Security Council meeting, Andriy Melnyk, Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the UN, called on the international community to strip the Russian Federation of its status as a permanent member of the Security Council.
This was reported by Ukrinform.
The Ukrainian diplomat emphasized that Russian aggression against Ukraine is marked by particular brutality.
He is convinced that the current security system requires immediate reform to restore justice.
The diplomat stressed that a state that violates the UN Charter and wages a war of aggression cannot continue to exercise its veto power and influence Security Council decisions.
According to Melnik, Russia has for years blocked international decisions regarding the cessation of the war and punishment for war crimes. Such a destructive stance by the Kremlin completely paralyzes the work of the world’s key security body.
He emphasized that the presence of the aggressor country among the Security Council’s permanent members undermines trust in the entire international security system.
