April 27: Folk traditions, holidays, and customs in Ukraine and around the world
April 27 was considered a difficult day in the folk calendar, so our ancestors paid special attention to it.
On this day, there were both natural omens and traditions associated with the start of fieldwork.
According to the New Julian calendar, today is the feast day of St. Stephen of Kiev-Pechersk. People traditionally prayed to him for a bountiful harvest of vegetables and fruits. According to folk beliefs, it was precisely during this period that active plowing of the land began.
Believers who follow the Julian calendar commemorate Pope Martin and Saint Mary of Egypt, considered the patroness of women, on this day.
In Ukraine, April 27 is unofficially celebrated as HR Specialist Day—a professional holiday for specialists in personnel administration, employee onboarding, and record-keeping. It is associated with the introduction of employment record books in independent Ukraine and has become popular among HR professionals.
Around the world today, a number of themed holidays are celebrated, including:
- World Graphic Design Day
- Tapir Day
- Marine Mammal Day
- Morse Code Day
- Stray Cat Spay and Neuter Day
- Frog Rescue Day
- Day of the Sense of Smell
During this period, nature begins to actively awaken, so many omens are associated with animals and the weather:
- foxes emerge from their dens—a sign of bad weather and possible river flooding;
- the arrival of swifts means there will be no more frosts;
- if a hare comes close to a dwelling—autumn will be harsh;
- a thunderstorm on this day foretells a good harvest of grain crops.
It was also believed that April 27 is a favorable time to begin gardening work, provided the soil has warmed up sufficiently. In villages, people began grazing livestock on the young grass, and people were advised to be kind and help one another.
According to folk beliefs, this day was considered emotionally tense. People noticed increased irritability and tried to avoid conflicts. It was also not recommended to boast about purchases or income, so as not to provoke envy.
As a reminder, on April 24, Orthodox believers commemorated the holy martyr Sava Stratilates and the 70 soldiers who died for their faith. This is a day about the power of choice, when people placed their convictions above fear and death. The history of this holiday serves as a reminder of courage that does not fade even in the most brutal circumstances.
