Over the past year, 80% of Ukrainian citizens read at least one book.
This is evidenced by data from a nationwide study of cultural practices and preferences conducted by the Research.ua agency, which was presented by the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine in Kyiv, according to a Ukrinform correspondent.
“While in the 2022 study 65% of Ukrainians said they had read at least one book a year, this year’s 2025 study indicates that 80% of Ukrainians are now engaged in reading. This points to a stable, gradual upward trend year over year and suggests that reading is becoming more popular. People enjoy reading; they see value in it for their personal development,” said Volodymyr Kutyuk, director of Research.ua.
It is noted that reading patterns indicate an occasional rather than regular practice, and that active readers make up a relatively small proportion of the population.
Specifically, 45% of Ukrainians read three or more books, 35% read one or two books, and 15% did not read a single book in a year.
In addition, 30% of people choose only bookstores, 21% choose bookstores and libraries, and 8% choose only libraries. This likely indicates that, compared to libraries, Ukrainian bookstores have a more up-to-date selection.
The study also shows that 75% of Ukrainians choose paper books, 55% choose e-books, and 24% choose audiobooks.
The survey was conducted December 22–30, 2025, via online interviews. A total of 2,000 respondents were surveyed. The audience comprises the adult urban population residing in territory controlled by the Ukrainian government.
