Ukraine plans to purchase up to 20 Gripen E/F fighter jets: the Office of the President has revealed details of the deal

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson signed a major defense agreement in Uppsala regarding Swedish Gripen fighter jets.

This was reported by the Office of the President of Ukraine.

The first phase of the agreement will involve the potential purchase of up to 20 Gripen E/F fighter jets.

“Ukraine plans to allocate 2.5 billion euros for this from the European Union loan under the Ukraine Support Loan,” the Office of the President noted.

They emphasized that the Gripen E/F is comparable to the American F-35 in terms of electronics.

“They are equipped with the latest radars and sensors to enhance precision in aerial combat, significantly upgraded electronic warfare systems, increased weapon range, and improved software,” the statement said.

Following the implementation of this agreement, Sweden will also transfer 16 Gripen C/D fighters to Ukraine as part of bilateral military aid.

The Office of the President emphasized that these aircraft are distinguished by their durability, ease of maintenance, and speed of rearmament.

“Thanks to its well-thought-out design, this aircraft model is one of the most durable among modern fighter jets,” the Office of the President stated.

The transfer of the Gripen will be part of Sweden’s largest military aid package to Ukraine, which will also include long-range weapons, ammunition, electronic warfare systems, and support for defense innovation.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine will allocate part of the €90 billion in financial aid from the European Union to defense needs, specifically for the purchase of Gripen fighter jets from Sweden. According to the head of state, the funding will help strengthen Ukraine’s defense and modernize its aviation capabilities.

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson stated that Stockholm and other countries in the region are prepared for possible actions by Russia in response to support for Ukraine, particularly in the event of the transfer of Gripen fighter jets.
