9-year-old Ruslan has finally received his second kidney transplant

9-year-old Ruslan has finally received his second kidney transplant

Ruslan, a 9-year-old boy who has lived with a severe kidney disease since birth, underwent his second transplant. After living in Israel for several years, the family returned to Ukraine, as it was here that the boy finally received a compatible donor organ. Ruslan is now gradually recovering and, for the first time in a long while, can live without severe restrictions.

The story of 9-year-old Ruslan is one of a long wait, a difficult struggle, and a new chance at a normal childhood. The boy’s serious condition was diagnosed at birth. Doctors diagnosed him with cystic renal dysplasia. Since then, Ruslan has been under constant medical supervision, and his family has done everything possible to support their son’s health.

A few years ago, the boy underwent a kidney transplant. At that time, his mother was the donor. The surgery gave Ruslan the opportunity to live a fuller life, and the transplanted organ functioned for three years. However, the kidney’s function eventually began to decline, and the boy needed another transplant.

After the full-scale war began, the family was forced to flee to Israel. They lived there for three years, hoping to receive the necessary medical care. However, they were unable to arrange a second kidney transplant. The family then made a difficult decision—to return to Ukraine and join the waiting list for a donor organ.

Ruslan waited a year and a half for a new kidney. All that time, the boy’s life was full of restrictions. The hardest part wasn’t even the treatment, but the ordinary things that other children take for granted. Ruslan was allowed to drink only 200 milliliters of fluid per day—less than one glass of water. He was also forced to follow a strict diet and constantly monitor his condition.

Finally, a compatible donor was found. Doctors performed a second kidney transplant on Ruslan. The donor organ was obtained through a deceased donor, giving the boy a chance at a new life. Doctors report that the surgery was successful, and the child is now recovering.

Ruslan is gradually returning to his normal life. Now he can drink water without strict restrictions, eat a normal diet, and engage in typical childhood activities. For a boy who lived under strict rules for many years and was constantly dependent on treatment, this has been a true victory. “Ruslan waited a year and a half for a new kidney,” the doctors said.

“Today, the boy is recovering from surgery and gradually returning to his normal life,” the doctors noted. Ahead of him lie rehabilitation and regular checkups. But the most important thing has already happened—he has been given a second chance at a healthy childhood. Now, instead of constant restrictions, the boy’s life is filled with the simple joys of childhood that he had waited so long for. This is precisely why his family returned home, and the donated organ has given Ruslan the opportunity to look to the future with hope. This was reported by the Center for Pediatric Medicine, Western Ukrainian Specialized Center.
