A GRU agent who was planning terrorist attacks in Kyiv was sentenced to 15 years in prison
A court sentenced a Russian military intelligence (GRU) agent, who was planning a series of terrorist attacks in Kyiv, to 15 years in prison with confiscation of property.
The SBU’s counterintelligence unit detained the suspect in June 2025 while seizing explosives from a hideout; he was planning to transport them to other hiding places for future attackers. Five kilograms of plastic explosives, detonators, and components for manufacturing improvised explosive devices were seized from him.
According to the investigation, the agent turned out to be a local unemployed man who, as far back as 2014, had fought against Ukraine as part of the “Iskra-2” terrorist group and participated in the battles for Donetsk Airport. He was later recruited by Russian military intelligence.
In the spring of 2025, Russian intelligence services instructed him to set up several caches of explosives on the outskirts of the capital. He was then supposed to transmit the coordinates of the caches to his handlers in Russia via markers on Google Maps.
Law enforcement also seized the convicted man’s laptop, tablet, and cell phones, which were used to communicate with Russian intelligence agencies.
The court found him guilty of treason committed under martial law.
