Mass deaths of dolphins and fish have been reported near the temporarily occupied city of Mariupol

A mass die-off of dolphins and fish has been reported along the coast of the Sea of Azov near the temporarily occupied city of Mariupol. This has been reported by eyewitnesses, who have posted videos and photos from the scene. Experts and local residents are documenting a significant number of dead marine animals along the coast. The causes of the incident have not yet been officially identified.

This was stated by the Mariupol City Council.

According to the city council, the number of dead animals is already twice as high as last year’s figures.

What is happening on the coast

Occupation-controlled social media accounts in Mariupol have published photos and videos of dead dolphins and fish washed ashore on the Azov Sea.

Dead dolphins were also found on beaches in the villages of Urzuf and Sedove.

Local residents attribute the worsening environmental situation to sea pollution.

What local residents are saying

Mariupol residents report spills of fuel oil and crude oil, as well as sewage entering the sea.

"They’re poisoning the sea. And lately, it seems like it’s on purpose. Fuel oil and oil spills. Volunteers are scrubbing and cleaning the poor birds, but how many have already died and how many more will die?" the city council quotes residents as saying.

According to the city council, fish are also dying en masse due to the deterioration of water quality in the Sea of Azov.

Earlier reports indicated the near-total destruction of gobies in the waters of the Sea of Azov.
