A woman will stand trial in Kyiv for defrauding a soldier by pretending to be ill
A woman accused of defrauding a military serviceman is set to stand trial in Kyiv. According to the investigation, she used fake social media accounts to trick the man out of nearly 700,000 hryvnias under the pretext of treating cancer.
Investigators determined that the woman created a fake profile on the Telegram messaging app using a photo of a young woman and, in the summer of 2024, met a 31-year-old soldier originally from the Zhytomyr region.
During their correspondence, it turned out that they were supposedly from neighboring villages and had mutual acquaintances. Eventually, the messaging evolved into phone calls about love. Having gained the man’s trust, the scammer began complaining about her health: first, she claimed she had contracted COVID-19, and then she fabricated a terminal cancer diagnosis. Playing on his pity, she wrote that no one needed her and that she might die.

The soldier sincerely believed these stories and repeatedly sought money for his “beloved,” who eventually claimed she had gone to “Germany for treatment.” In total, during the course of their communication, the man transferred nearly 700,000 UAH to the defendant.

The Darnytsia District Prosecutor’s Office of Kyiv has already filed an indictment against the suspect. She faces severe punishment for large-scale fraud (Part 4 of Article 190 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).
This was reported by the press service of the Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office.
