British judges are teaching their Ukrainian counterparts about commercial law to facilitate EU integration — The Telegraph

Senior British judges are helping Ukrainian judges gain expertise in commercial law to prepare Ukraine for accession to the European Union.

These specialized training programs are designed to accelerate judicial reform and bring Ukrainian legislation into line with high European standards.

The main goal of the program is to increase the transparency of the justice system and attract foreign investment for post-war reconstruction.

Last week, Jake Richards, the UK’s Deputy Minister of Justice, led a three-day training session in Kraków, Poland, attended by Ukrainian judges.

This event was funded by the UK Ministry of Justice as part of a long-term program to support Ukrainian state institutions.

British lawyers shared their experience in resolving complex commercial and financial disputes with their Ukrainian colleagues.

Official Brussels is imposing strict requirements on Kyiv on the path to European integration, where judicial reform plays a key role.

As part of the accession negotiations, the European Union requires Ukraine to implement reforms to combat corruption and to support the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary, and the British experience with its judicial system can help Kyiv implement these reforms.

A stable commercial law framework must serve as the foundation for long-term cooperation with European businesses.

The Ukrainian side highly values the United Kingdom’s contribution to reforming our country’s legal system.

Lyudmyla Sugak, Acting Head of the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, told the Telegraph that the British legal system is “a compelling example of legal evolution in a state based on stable democratic institutions.”

The development of commercial litigation will help minimize corruption risks and create transparent rules of the game for business. Adequate protection of property rights is critical for rebuilding the country’s devastated infrastructure.

“As Ukraine’s economy strengthens, commercial justice is one of the key elements in protecting investments, restoring public trust in state institutions, and ensuring the country’s economic stability,” she says.

The Telegraph reports on this.
