The proportion of women among the unemployed in Ukraine rose to 81% during the war

During the full-scale war, the proportion of women among officially registered unemployed people in Ukraine rose from 55% to 81%.

This was reported by Stanislav Pavlenko, deputy director of the State Employment Center.

According to him, before the start of the full-scale invasion, women accounted for slightly more than half of all unemployed people, but their share has increased significantly over the years of the war.

To expand employment opportunities for women, a pilot vocational training program has been in place in Ukraine since 2025, focusing on fields traditionally considered male-dominated.

Currently, training is available in 31 professions, and a mandatory condition for participation is subsequent employment. Since the beginning of 2026, 402 women have already joined the program.

The State Employment Center also noted that official data on the overall unemployment rate in Ukraine have not been published since 2022. The latest available figure from the State Statistics Service, calculated using the methodology of the International Labor Organization, was for 2021—at that time, the unemployment rate among the population aged 15–70 was 9.9%.
