Cherries Are Getting More Expensive Again; Imports Are Breaking Price Records
Cherries in Ukraine have begun to rise in price again after several days of price declines. Over the past week, the price of cherries has returned to the level buyers saw in late June. At the same time, imported cherries have become even more expensive, while some other seasonal berries, on the contrary, have become more affordable.
After a brief drop in prices, cherry prices have gone back up. According to data from the Kyiv Market, on Friday, July 3, Ukrainian cherries were selling for an average of 120 hryvnias per kilogram. Just a few days ago, the situation was quite different. On Wednesday, July 1, the average price was 90 hryvnias per kilogram, and on Monday, June 29, the berries could be bought for about 80 hryvnias.
In fact, within a few days, the price of cherries returned to the levels seen a week ago. For comparison, on June 26, the average price was also 120 hryvnias per kilogram. Currently, Ukrainian cherries are selling on the market for between 80 and 130 hryvnias per kilogram. It all depends on the variety, the quality of the berries, and the seller. Imported cherries have become even more expensive. While imported cherries were selling for about 150 hryvnias per kilogram last Friday, prices temporarily dropped to 120 hryvnias at the start of the week.
However, this drop proved to be short-lived. As of July 3, the average price of imported cherries had already risen to 180 hryvnias per kilogram, and at some vendors, the berries cost between 170 and 200 hryvnias per kilogram. While cherries are becoming more expensive again, more other seasonal berries are gradually appearing on the market. Their supply is increasing, and prices are falling along with it. For example, raspberries became about 20%cheaper in just two days. The current average price is 160 hryvnias per kilogram.
Black currants have become even more affordable. They are selling for an average of 140 hryvnias per kilogram. Since the beginning of the month, the price of this berry has dropped by about 30 hryvnias per kilogram. Experts note that as the supply of seasonal berries increases, the market situation may continue to change. At the same time, prices for cherries remain unstable for now and may fluctuate depending on the volume of the new harvest, demand, and weather conditions. This is reported by the Capital Market website.
Blueberries in Ukraine are currently significantly more expensive than they were at the height of the season. According to berry market expert Denys Mironov, the reason is simple: Ukrainian blueberries have not yet hit the market in large quantities, and imported products dominate stores and markets. Once the active harvest of domestic blueberries begins, prices are expected to drop significantly.
Young Ukrainian potatoes continue to get cheaper. In just over a week, their average price has halved—from 30 to 15 hryvnias per kilogram.
In early July, prices for seasonal fruits and berries changed in Ukraine. Strawberries and cherries saw the biggest price increases over the past week, while apples, bananas, oranges, and lemons are selling for nearly the same prices.
