A 15-year-old boy from the Lviv region nearly lost his sight because of his mischief in class

Doctors at St. Nicholas Children’s Hospital in Lviv performed emergency surgery on a 15-year-old boy from the Sambir region who suffered a severe eye injury during class.

As a result of a classmate’s prank, the sharp tip of a plastic highlighter pierced the cornea, causing some of the intraocular fluid to leak out.

The incident occurred when the student tried to tickle the girl sitting in front of him, and she responded by throwing her pencil case at him.

The injured teenager was immediately hospitalized, as the condition of his eye was critical upon arrival at the medical facility.

“Since the injury was peripheral rather than central, the hole in the cornea was immediately sealed from the inside by the iris, like a band-aid, which stopped the leakage of intraocular fluid. The eye more or less retained its shape, although its tone had decreased due to blood loss,” notes Marianna Onysyk, head of the ophthalmology department.

Surgeons promptly intervened by placing six microsutures on the damaged area. Afterward, the patient was prescribed intensive anti-inflammatory therapy to promote the fastest possible tissue recovery.

During a recent routine checkup, doctors confirmed excellent rehabilitation results.

The teenager’s vision has been fully restored, and only a barely noticeable scar remains at the site of the injury, which does not affect the eye’s function in any way.

“Vision has been restored 100%; there is only a small scar on the periphery of the cornea, which does not affect the eye’s function and is visually imperceptible. It can only be seen under a microscope,” explains Marianna Onysyk.

This was reported by the hospital.
