Due to the Russian attack, schools will not receive some of their textbooks by September 1
A Russian airstrike on July 19 destroyed more than 410,000 Ukrainian school textbooks that were already being prepared for shipment to schools. As a result, some of the books will have to be reprinted, and their delivery to schools will be delayed by at least several months.
The Ministry of Education assures that the educational process will not be interrupted. While the reprinting is underway, students will be able to use electronic versions of the textbooks.
A Russian attack on July 19 destroyed more than 410,000 school textbooks that Ukrainian students were supposed to receive before the start of the new school year. This was reported by Andriy Butenko, Ukraine’s Minister of Education and Science. According to him, following the strike, the Ministry of Education, together with publishers and the Institute for the Modernization of Educational Content, assessed the extent of the losses.
Which textbooks were destroyed
According to preliminary data, the Russian strike destroyed:
- over 260,000 textbooks for 9th grade that had already been printed;
- about 150,000 textbooks for 4th grade, which were at various stages of preparation for printing or shipment.
The minister noted that a significant portion of the books had already been printed, packaged, and prepared for delivery to Ukrainian schools. However, the entire print run was lost due to the Russian strike.
When will schools receive new books?
According to Butenko, all the destroyed textbooks will now have to be reprinted. “The print run will have to be reprinted, and delivery to educational institutions will have to be postponed for at least several months. We are already in contact with publishers and are coordinating how to make up for the lost time,” the minister said.
While the reprinting is underway, schools will be advised to use electronic versions of the textbooks if necessary. The Ministry of Education and Science emphasizes that this will ensure an uninterrupted educational process, even if printing new copies takes longer.
Will Schools Have Enough Other Textbooks?
The Ministry of Education emphasized that the destroyed print run is only a portion of the total textbook order for the new school year. Deliveries of other books to schools are proceeding on schedule. As of July 22, Ukrainian schools had already received more than 1.4 million copies of new textbooks.
This is not the first time Russia has attacked printing plants
Andriy Butenko noted that this is not the first time Russian troops have struck printing plants and warehouses where Ukrainian textbooks are printed or stored. According to him, through such attacks, Russia is attempting to damage not only infrastructure but also Ukrainian education.
Despite the losses, the Ministry of Education assures that it will do everything possible to print a new batch as quickly as possible and provide students with the necessary textbooks. At the same time, schools are advised to use digital versions of educational materials if necessary until the printing and delivery of new books are completed.
