The State Bureau of Investigations is looking into the possibility of sabotage following an uncontrolled detonation of ammunition at a military facility on the outskirts of Khmelnytskyi. During search operations at the training ground, body parts were discovered and sent for forensic medical and molecular genetic analysis to identify the victims.
According to the State Bureau of Investigations, as reported by “Ukrainska Pravda,” the explosion occurred on July 31 at approximately 11:55 a.m. and continued until nearly the end of the day. As of August 3, five servicemen were listed as missing. It has been preliminarily established that during the first explosion, they were unloading ammunition at the military unit’s warehouse.
Eight servicemen were injured. According to the bureau, their lives are not in danger. The State Bureau of Investigation has not received any reports of civilian casualties.

Investigators are considering two main theories regarding the incident. The first is a violation of safety protocols during the transport or unloading of ammunition, which could have caused the initial explosion and subsequent detonation. The second theory is sabotage aimed at destroying the weapons.
SBI officers, together with the command of the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ Special Operations Forces, the National Police, and the State Emergency Service, conducted initial investigative actions. They interviewed the command, military personnel from the unit, and the victims, and seized documents related to the storage, transportation, and unloading of ammunition.
Rescue workers continue to clear the area outside the military facility of unexploded ordnance, while law enforcement officials are documenting damage to residential buildings and other property near the training ground. The case has been preliminarily classified under Part 2 of Article 414 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
