Experts predict that buckwheat prices will rise in August
In Ukraine, buckwheat prices may rise to 80–83 hryvnias per kilogram in August 2026. Despite a slight decline in prices in July, the Institute of Agricultural Economics believes there are currently no signs of further price drops.
According to Svitlana Cheremisina, Ph.D. in Economics and senior research fellow at the Institute of Agricultural Economics, buckwheat prices have risen by 70.8% since the beginning of 2026.
According to her, in July, the average price of buckwheat fell by 3.3%—to 76.67 hryvnia per kilogram. However, this is most likely a temporary seasonal phenomenon and does not indicate a long-term downward trend.
The expert explained that the market continues to be influenced by high costs of production, processing, energy, logistics, and labor. In addition, the supply of Ukrainian raw materials remains limited, while consumer demand is stable.
According to Svitlana Cheremisina’s forecast, prices for most types of grains are expected to rise in August, but buckwheat may see the sharpest increase. She estimates that the price of buckwheat could rise by another 3–5%, reaching 80–83 hryvnias per kilogram.
The Institute of Agricultural Economics also notes that buckwheat production in Ukraine is relatively small compared to other grains, making this segment particularly sensitive to crop yields, inventory levels, and the overall market situation.
According to experts, Ukrainians consume about 100,000–110,000 metric tons of buckwheat annually. At the same time, the 2025 harvest amounted to only 70,800 metric tons, leading to a product shortage that is partially offset by carryover stocks.

As a reminder, in July, prices for fresh vegetables in Ukraine fell significantly, particularly for potatoes, carrots, beets, cabbage, and cucumbers. At the same time, some fruits, berries, and greenhouse vegetables remain expensive due to the heat, storage costs, and seasonal factors.
