A National Guard official will stand trial for charging more than 72 million hryvnias in combat allowances

An indictment against the former head of the engineering service of one of the military units of the National Guard of Ukraine was filed with the court on July 30. According to the investigation, he is accused of unjustifiably charging over 72 million hryvnias in combat allowances, which caused significant losses to the state.

According to the investigation, from January to May 2024, a combined detachment from the military unit carried out work on the construction of fortifications and the installation of non-explosive barriers in eastern Ukraine.

The servicemen were carrying out tasks on the second line of defense, which entitled them to additional compensation in the amount of 30,000 hryvnias. Despite this, the defendant, fully aware of the actual conditions of service, drafted and signed reports containing false information about the alleged direct presence of 317 service members in combat zones.

Based on these documents, they were unjustifiably paid increased compensation—100,000 UAH each instead of the prescribed 30,000 UAH. As a result, the state budget suffered losses of over 72 million UAH.

The amount of the losses was confirmed by audits conducted by the Western Office of the State Audit Service and the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, as well as by the findings of a forensic economic examination.

In January 2026, the former official was notified of the charges against him. His actions were classified under Part 5 of Article 426-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. To recover the losses incurred by the state, the prosecutor’s office filed a civil suit. In accordance with Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a court verdict.
