The EU has approved the UK's participation in a €90 billion loan program for Ukraine
EU countries have agreed to the United Kingdom’s participation in the European loan mechanisms for Ukraine totaling 90 billion euros. This will make it possible to use these funds to purchase defense products from British manufacturers, according to Ukrainska Pravda, citing the EU Council’s press service.
On July 22, EU member states agreed to the UK’s participation in financial support mechanisms designed to cover Ukraine’s key defense needs in 2026–2027. This extends the agreement on the UK’s participation in the program, signed between the EU and the UK on July 13.
The loan provides for 60 billion euros in investments for military needs, including defense procurement. An additional 30 billion euros is to be allocated for direct economic and budgetary support to Ukraine.
The UK’s participation was made possible by its meeting of three criteria for third countries: the country has committed to making a “fair and proportionate” financial contribution, has a defense and security partnership with the EU, and is already providing significant support to Ukraine. The EU Council is expected to formally approve the UK’s participation in the coming days through a written procedure.
