In 2008, Karas joined civic movements. He participated in protests against the development of Vasyl Stus Square and the Gostiny Dvor in Kyiv. During the presidency of Viktor Yanukovych, a criminal case was opened against him for organizing riots, and he was placed on the wanted list; however, the case was closed after the Revolution of Dignity. From 2010 to 2014, he was a member of the All-Ukrainian Union “Svoboda,” served as an aide to People’s Deputy Andriy Illenko, and ran for a seat on the Kyiv City Council.

During the Euromaidan, Karas was one of the coordinators of the seizure of the Kyiv City State Administration building and the Trade Union House. He later became the commandant of the Kyiv City State Administration and led the Prince Sviatoslav the Brave Self-Defense Unit. After the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian war in 2014, he joined the Ministry of Internal Affairs’ “Kyiv-2” battalion, where he served at checkpoints near Volnovakha. He subsequently transferred to the “Harpun” battalion, which carried out reconnaissance and counter-sabotage missions.

From the very first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Karas has been participating in combat operations as part of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. In 2023–2024, he served as deputy commander for morale and psychological support of the 14th Separate Regiment of Unmanned Aerial Systems. Since September 2024, Yevhen Karas has commanded the 413th Separate “Raid” Unmanned Systems Regiment. In February 2025, he was promoted to the rank of major, and in December of that same year, he received the presidential award “Cross of Combat Merit.” Yevhen Karas’s brother, Volodymyr Karas, also defended Ukraine. He was killed on March 3, 2022, while defending Kyiv. This was reported by Dmytro Korchynskyi, leader of the “Brotherhood” political party.
