The European Union promises not to delay the delivery of missiles for the Patriot system
The European Union promises to review Ukraine’s request for interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense systems as soon as possible. The European Commission says the matter is urgent, but the final decision must be made by EU member states.
The European Union is trying to expedite the review of Ukraine’s request for interceptor missiles for the Patriot air defense systems. The European Commission emphasizes that it understands the urgency of this matter and does not want to delay the process.
According to the Commission, it is already working on the matter as quickly as possible. However, there is an important caveat: a special exemption from EU rules is required to supply the missiles.
Why EU Approval Is Needed
The problem stems from where exactly the missiles for Ukraine’s Patriot systems will be manufactured. According to Ujvari, they will be produced outside both the European Union and Ukraine. Because of this, a corresponding exemption is required for such a procurement. And this is precisely where the European Commission cannot make a final decision on its own. “Given the urgency, we are, of course, pushing this issue forward as quickly as possible,” said Ujvari.
He added that the final decision rests with the EU member states. The European Commission hopes that the necessary authorization will be granted in the near future. “The final decision rests with the member states, and, of course, we hope it will be granted soon,” the spokesperson stated. Thus, the issue is currently in the coordination phase among EU member states. The European Commission can facilitate and expedite the process, but cannot grant final approval on its own.
Ukraine has already submitted delivery schedules
According to Ujvari, Ukraine has already provided the European Union with information on exactly when it needs the Patriot interceptor missiles. These are the delivery schedules. At the same time, specific dates and quantities are not being disclosed, as this information is confidential.
This means that the Ukrainian side has already identified its needs and communicated them to its European partners. Now, EU countries need to agree on a mechanism that will allow for the necessary procurements to be made. For Ukraine, this issue is of particular importance due to the ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks. Patriot systems are used to protect cities and critical infrastructure, and their interceptor missiles are one of the key components of such a defense.
EU countries held separate discussions on Ukraine’s air defense
The issue of supporting Ukraine’s air defense was also discussed during a closed-door meeting of EU representatives on September 2. Another European Commission spokesperson, Christian Wiegand, stated that member states discussed additional assistance for Ukraine to protect its airspace.
According to him, EU countries are ready to provide Ukraine with more air defense systems, which it urgently needs to protect its people. “The most important thing is that we have made further progress in providing support for air defense,” Wiegand said.
At the same time, EU countries plan to announce specific decisions independently. Representatives of the member states stated that they will announce their assistance when they deem it appropriate. Therefore, there is currently no complete list of exactly which systems, missiles, or other air defense equipment may be transferred to Ukraine, nor a timeline for such transfers.
Why Patriot Missiles Are Important for Ukraine
The Patriot is one of the most powerful air defense systems used by the Ukrainian military. It is designed to intercept aerial targets, including ballistic and cruise missiles. However, simply having launchers does not ensure constant protection without a sufficient supply of ammunition. The systems require interceptor missiles, and these stocks must be regularly replenished.
Russia continues to use large numbers of missiles and attack drones against Ukraine. As a result, the need for additional air defense capabilities remains constant. Such systems are particularly important for protecting major cities, energy facilities, and other critical infrastructure. Strengthening air defense also helps reduce the risk of civilian deaths and injuries during Russian attacks.

The next step is for EU member states to decide on the necessary exemption. The European Commission states that, for its part, it is trying not to delay the process and understands the urgency of Ukraine’s request. Ukraine has already provided its partners with schedules detailing when it needs the Patriot missiles. However, specific delivery dates are not being disclosed at this time.
Separately, EU countries must decide on other additional resources for Ukraine’s air defense. They may announce specific decisions on their own. For now, the key issue rests with the EU member states. Their decision will determine whether the necessary exemption will be granted and how quickly Ukraine will be able to receive additional missiles for the Patriot systems. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that Washington is negotiating with Ukraine regarding the granting of licenses to manufacture missiles for the Patriot air defense systems.
