Photo: New trams have arrived in Kam'yanske
A large-scale modernization of the city’s electric transit system has begun in Kamensk. Metinvest, a metallurgical holding company that includes Kametstal, has allocated more than 50 million hryvnias to co-finance the purchase of 17 modern tram cars.
The first new tram has already arrived in the city and will soon begin operating on Route No. 1.
The project is being implemented in partnership with the European Investment Bank and the Kamyanske City Council.
By the end of 2026, Kamyanske is set to receive six more new cars, and another 11 trams are scheduled to arrive in 2027.
The new fleet will operate on all four city routes.
According to Mayor Andriy Bilousov, 20 trams operate on the routes daily, so the project will allow for the modernization of approximately 85% of the city’s electric transit fleet by 2027.
He also noted that the tram is the primary form of public transportation for this industrial city. Each year, it serves approximately 10 million passengers, 70% of whom are eligible for fare discounts.
The new cars are low-floor and energy-efficient.
They are equipped with:
- air conditioning systems;
- CCTV cameras;
- folding ramps;
- equipment for the safe transportation of passengers with limited mobility.
According to Olga Afanasyeva, head of operations at the municipal enterprise “Transport,” the folding ramp near the second door ensures accessibility for people with disabilities, and the passenger compartment is equipped with seat belts and meets modern safety requirements.
This tram is the first new car the city has received in the past two years.
It was manufactured by the Ukrainian company “Tatra-Yug.”
Production was temporarily suspended following a Russian missile strike on the facility, but the company was able to resume operations and return to fulfilling orders.
Kametstal CEO Oleksandr Tretyakov noted that the company has already allocated over 50 million hryvnias to modernize the city’s electric transit system.
According to him, these investments contribute to the comfort of the city’s residents and support community development even amid a full-scale war.
The project is being implemented under a Memorandum of Cooperation between Metinvest and the Kamyanske City Council.
In addition to upgrading the transit system, the company invested 70 million hryvnias in the development of Kamyanske’s social infrastructure in 2025. The funds were allocated for the reconstruction of Hospitals No. 9 and No. 7, the emergency medical care hospital, and Primary Health Care Center No. 3.

As a reminder, Ukrzaliznytsia is launching four new regional electric trains on the Kyiv–Korosten route and in the opposite direction. In addition, two more commuter trains will begin operating between Kyiv and Malyn.
