A boy with a congenital cleft palate underwent successful surgery in Lviv
At the Clinical Center for Pediatric Medicine, a complex surgery was successfully performed on a 9-month-old boy from the Donetsk region who was born with a congenital cleft of the hard and soft palate. Due to this condition, the child had serious difficulties eating and swallowing, and food constantly entered his nasal cavity, which also caused respiratory tract infections.
Timofiy’s family was forced to leave the Kramatorsk district due to hostilities and moved to the Ternopil region, where they were granted internally displaced person (IDP) status.
Shortly after birth, doctors diagnosed the boy with a congenital cleft of the hard and soft palates. The family was advised that surgical treatment was necessary, but the necessary specialists were not available where they lived.
After moving, the family doctor referred the child to the Clinical Center for Pediatric Medicine, where a team of specialists provides comprehensive treatment for children with congenital cleft lip and palate.
At 9 months of age, the boy underwent surgery to close the cleft palate. Doctors emphasize that this is the most favorable period for such a procedure.
According to the doctors, the surgery allows the child to:
- restore normal swallowing and feeding;
- reduce the risk of upper respiratory tract and middle ear infections;
- create conditions for proper speech development;
- avoid disrupting the natural growth of the maxillofacial skeleton.
The surgery was successful, and the family was pleased with the outcome and the medical team’s work.
The surgical procedure was performed by a multidisciplinary team from the Center, which included maxillofacial surgeons, a pediatric surgical resident, an anesthesiologist, and an operating room nurse.
Following the surgery, Tymofiy continues his treatment under the supervision of specialists. In particular, he is working with a speech therapist to develop proper speech and an orthodontist to monitor jaw development and ensure a proper bite.
Medical professionals emphasize that it is precisely this multidisciplinary approach that ensures the full recovery of children with such congenital conditions.
