Ukrainian Grandmaster Vasyl Ivanchuk will be inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame
Ukrainian grandmaster Vasyl Ivanchuk will be inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame. This was announced on August 5 by the press service of the Kyiv Chess Federation.
The formal ceremony will take place in October 2026 in St. Louis, Missouri, where the museum and the World Chess Hall of Fame have been located since 2011.
Along with Ivanchuk, this year’s inductees into the Hall of Fame will include Israeli grandmaster Boris Gelfand, Sweden’s Ulf Andersson, as well as female chess players Nana Ioseliani of Georgia and Alexandra Kosteniuk of Switzerland.
Vasyl Ivanchuk is one of Ukraine’s most decorated chess players. He earned the title of grandmaster in 1988. Throughout his career, he has won World Team Championships as a member of the Soviet Union and Ukraine national teams, won the Chess Olympiads four times, and claimed the world titles in blitz in 2007 and rapid in 2016. In addition, he is a European champion.
In 2002, Ivanchuk lost to Ruslan Ponomariov in a match for the FIDE World Championship title.

As a reminder, the Council of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) decided to temporarily suspend the membership of the Russian Chess Federation due to its failure to comply with a ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
FIDE also suspended American chess player Christopher Yu from competition for one year due to aggressive behavior.
