What church holiday is on June 3: and what is forbidden to do on this day

On June 3, according to the new church calendar of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, the memory of the martyr Lucillian and his companions—Paul, Claudius, Hypatius, and Dionysius—who suffered for the Christian faith in the 3rd century, is honored.

Lucillian was a pagan priest, but he converted to Christianity and began preaching the new faith. By order of Emperor Aurelian, he was imprisoned along with other Christians. According to legend, the martyrs, who had been sentenced to be burned at the stake, were saved by rain and strong winds that extinguished the flames; however, they were later executed.

In the folk calendar, this day was called Lukian the Windmill. Our ancestors closely observed the wind, considering it a harbinger of future weather and harvests. A southerly wind foretold a good harvest and favorable events, while an easterly wind signaled difficulties and illness.

People pray to Saint Lukillian for the strengthening of faith, spiritual fortitude, and help in difficult life circumstances.

The Church urges people to avoid quarrels, insults, envy, greed, gossip, and laziness on this day.

According to folk beliefs, on June 3, one should not leave the house with a large sum of money, so as not to invite financial losses. It is also not recommended to make impulsive purchases or tell strangers about one’s plans.
