The Cabinet of Ministers has authorized the construction of fortifications in the Chernobyl Nature Reserve
The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has authorized the use of a portion of the land within the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve for the construction of fortifications and border infrastructure.
The government adopted the corresponding decision on July 15. According to the document, 695.2 hectares of land in the exclusion zone and the zone of unconditional (mandatory) resettlement in the Kyiv region have been removed from the nature reserve fund.
The plots have been transferred for permanent use to the 9th Border Detachment named after the Sich Riflemen of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine. At the same time, the Cabinet of Ministers changed their designated purpose from land in the nature reserve fund to defense land.
Border guards have been granted the right to construct and maintain fortifications and engineering structures, fences, border markers, clear-cuts, and utility lines. The document also permits the cutting of trees and shrubs on designated plots, with the timber to be used in accordance with the law.
