Kernel will use corn byproducts to test fuel for grain dryers
Kernel plans to test byproducts left over from corn cleaning at grain elevators as fuel for grain dryers. These byproducts include chaff, broken kernels, and chaff, which account for up to 2–3% of the total.
According to Serhiy Shcherban, head of the company’s storage department, the plan is to retain whole, high-quality grain after cleaning at the elevator and to use the separated byproducts for combustion to generate heat during the drying process.
“We’re also looking into burning the byproducts generated during corn cleaning: broken kernels, cracked kernels, and chaff. We need to clean as thoroughly as possible, leaving only whole, high-quality corn, and use everything else for drying,” Shcherban noted.
Kernel began working on the project even before the port crisis. The company was developing a fuel formula and determining the proportions in which corn cleaning byproducts could be mixed with pellets or wood chips.
To this end, the agricultural holding consulted with Greko Group. The experts proposed installing two separate hoppers to feed fuel into the furnace. Such a system would allow the ratio of pellets to corn by-products to be adjusted during operation.
Due to the port crisis, the company did not receive funding for the installation of the hoppers in a timely manner. However, Kernel has not abandoned the idea itself.
According to Shcherban, the company plans to test the use of corn byproducts as fuel using its existing equipment. If the developed formula proves successful, the company will continue to develop this area.
