A Crimean Tatar human rights activist spoke at the UN about the torture of Ukrainians held captive by Russia
Crimean Tatar human rights activist Leniye Umerova stated during a UN Security Council meeting that Russia systematically uses unlawful detentions, fabricated cases, isolation, and torture to keep Ukrainian civilians in captivity.
She explained that in late 2022, she was unlawfully detained after traveling to occupied Crimea, where she had intended to visit her seriously ill father.
According to her, after six months in prison and a court ruling ordering her release, Russian security forces abducted her again right outside the prison gates and transported her to another detention facility.
Umerova emphasized that her story is not an exception but part of a systematic practice. She said that in the occupied territories, people are abducted, held without contact with the outside world, denied access to lawyers, and their families are not informed of their whereabouts.

Participants discussed the unlawful detention of civilians, torture and cruel treatment of prisoners of war, sexual violence, and executions. They also raised the issue of foreigners whom Russia is recruiting to fight in the war against Ukraine.
