In the Rivne region, due to a prolonged hydrological drought, water levels in the Styr, Horyn, and Ikva rivers have dropped to critical levels.
Near the village of Dyuksyn on the Horyn River, unique rocky rapids that are usually hidden underwater have even been exposed.
According to experts, the lowest water levels in recorded history have been observed in certain sections of the Styr River. Small and medium-sized rivers in the Pripyat basin are at risk of ecological depletion, and in the absence of rain, the Ikva may partially lose its flow.
Forecasters note that short-term downpours are not enough to significantly improve the situation. To restore water levels, sustained moderate rainfall over several weeks or even a month is needed.
Environmentalists warn that further shallowing could lead to fish deaths, the destruction of aquatic ecosystems, a shortage of drinking water, and reduced crop yields.
