Doctors in Lviv removed a thermometer from a woman’s body that she had been living with for eight years
Urologists at the University Hospital of the Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University performed a unique and highly complex surgical procedure.
The doctors successfully removed a mercury thermometer from the bladder of a 42-year-old woman from the Lviv region, which had been inside her body for eight years.
The patient sought medical help only after she began suffering from severe and constant pain in her lower abdomen.
During the initial medical examination, doctors encountered an extremely rare and mysterious pathology of the internal organs.
Ultrasound diagnostics revealed the presence of a dense foreign object that, over a long period of time, had become covered with a thick layer of salt deposits.
To establish a definitive diagnosis and pinpoint the exact location of the mass, the medical staff decided to immediately refer the woman for a CT scan.
“During the ultrasound examination, we saw a mass in the bladder that looked like a large stone with a rod inside. To determine the exact nature of this mass, we sent the woman for a CT scan. It was the CT scan that provided a clear answer: there was a mercury thermometer in the bladder, which had become completely encrusted with stone over the years,” said urologist Vasyl Matviiv.

Earlier in Kyiv, rabies was detected in a cat that a resident of the capital had picked up in Boyarka and taken in to her apartment. The animal died.
