Mykolaiv bid farewell to the commander of the 154th Brigade, who was found shot to death
A farewell ceremony was held in Mykolaiv for Colonel Volodymyr Kononnikov, commander of the 154th Separate Mechanized Brigade. The soldier, who had previously been found shot to death, was laid to rest by his family, comrades, friends, and city residents.
Those who had known the commander throughout his many years of military service traveled to Kononnikov’s hometown to pay their respects.
Numerous representatives of the command staff of the Army and Airborne Assault Brigades, representatives of the psychological support units of the 16th and 17th Army Corps, as well as Colonel Andriy Martynov, head of the Main Directorate for Psychological Support of Personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“Volodymyr Kononnikov had a remarkable combat career—from paratrooper to commander of a mechanized brigade. From the first days of the Russian aggression in 2014 until the last day of his life, Konan remained faithful to his military oath. He took direct part in battles on the most intense fronts, was wounded multiple times, but each time returned to the front lines and continued the fight,” the brigade stated.
What is known about the death of Vladimir Kononnikov?
On June 28, the “South” Operational Command reported the death of Colonel Vladimir Kononnikov, commander of the 154th Separate Mechanized Brigade. They stated that, according to preliminary data, no signs of violence were found.
The Zaporizhzhia Regional Police said the deceased had a gunshot wound. The prosecutor’s office reported that Kononnikov’s body was found with a through-and-through gunshot wound to the temple. He was lying in an open area near a forest strip in the Zaporizhzhia region; his personal pistol was found next to him.
It is reported that shortly before his death, Vitaliy Kononnikov sent voice messages to his family and colleagues and smoked a cigarette.
Law enforcement officials are considering three main possibilities: murder, suicide, and negligent handling of a firearm.
