New potatoes in Ukraine are already half the price they were last week

The price of new Ukrainian potatoes continues to fall. In just over a week, the average price has dropped by half—from 30 to 15 hryvnias per kilogram.

Ukrainian producers are currently offering the lowest prices. At the same time, pink new potatoes remain significantly more expensive, while last year’s harvest has almost caught up in price with the new one.

New-crop new potatoes in Ukraine continue to drop rapidly in price. While they were selling for about 30 hryvnias per kilogram at the end of June, the average price is now 15 hryvnias. Thus, in just over a week, the price of Ukrainian new potatoes has dropped exactly by half.

Prices currently vary depending on the variety, quality, and preparation method. Unwashed white new potatoes are the cheapest. At the beginning of the week, their average price was 15 hryvnias per kilogram, but it has already dropped to 13 hryvnias.

Shoppers will have to pay a little more for white, washed new potatoes—an average of 17 hryvnias per kilogram. Pink new potatoes, on the other hand, are in no hurry to get cheaper just yet. On average, they cost about 35 hryvnias per kilogram, and depending on quality and the seller, the price can range from 30 to 45 hryvnias.

Interestingly, potatoes from last year’s harvest are now almost on par with new potatoes in price. Their average cost is 14 hryvnias per kilogram. Depending on where they’re sold, they can be found for between 12 and 16 hryvnias per kilogram.

Experts explain that the drop in the price of new potatoes is entirely a seasonal phenomenon. New batches of the harvest from Ukrainian farms arrive on the market daily, so supply is growing rapidly. As a result, sellers are gradually lowering prices to move their products more quickly. If this trend continues, new potatoes may become even more affordable for shoppers in the coming weeks, especially at the height of the harvest. This is evidenced by data from the “Stolichny” market.

In early July, prices for seasonal fruits and berries changed in Ukraine. Strawberries and cherries saw the biggest price increases over the past week, while apples, bananas, oranges, and lemons are selling at nearly the same prices.
