The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has officially adopted the Ukrainian transliteration of Kyiv, Odesa, Donbas, and Chernobyl
The Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is officially changing the rules for transliterating Ukrainian place names, moving away from outdated versions based on the Russian language.
According to the new decision by the country’s foreign ministry, Swedish official documents will now use the forms Kyjiv instead of the former Kiev, Odesa instead of Odessa, Donbas instead of Donbass, and Tjornobyl instead of the previously used Tjernobyl.
The Embassy of Ukraine in the Kingdom of Sweden expressed its gratitude to the Swedish side for this important step. Ukrainian diplomats emphasized that this decision is not merely a change in the spelling of cities and regions in international practice, but a significant demonstration of support for Ukrainian identity, culture, and history on the international stage.
This was reported by the Ukrainian Embassy in Sweden.
