The Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has appointed a diplomat from Hungary as its representative in Uzhhorod
István Balog, the newly appointed representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, has officially begun his duties in Uzhhorod.
Miroslav Biletsky, Head of the Transcarpathian Regional Military Administration, has already heldhis first working meeting with the diplomat on his first day in office.
During the meeting, the parties discussed in detail key areas of international cooperation, as well as important projects and initiatives that the border region is currently implementing jointly with European partners. István Balog has significant experience in the diplomatic service, having worked within the structure of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine for nearly 20 years. In particular, he served as an advisor at the Embassy of Ukraine in Hungary, and since 2022 has served as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim of Ukraine in that country.
The head of the Regional State Administration emphasized that the diplomat is well-versed in the complex issues of Ukrainian-Hungarian relations, which will directly contribute to strengthening communication between the two states and the development of further cooperation between Transcarpathia and the regions of Hungary. Biletsky also expressed his gratitude to Mykhailo Dzyhor, who headed the Uzhhorod office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for over two years. The regional head stressed that international cooperation and constant interaction with diplomats are of particular importance for effective communication with foreign partners in this border region.
Hungary’s new Prime Minister, Péter Magyar, made high-profile statements regarding the situation of the Hungarian national minority in Ukraine and the European Union’s future economic relations with the Russian Federation.
The foreign ministers of Ukraine and Hungary, Andriy Sybiga and Anita Orbán, held their first in-person meeting on May 22. During talks in Helsingborg, the parties agreed to hold a second round of expert-level consultations next week to further discuss bilateral issues.
Earlier, the Hungarian government commented on the massive attack by Russian drones on Zakarpattia, during which the region’s critical infrastructure was targeted. Budapest described the situation in the border region as extremely alarming and announced that it was preparing urgent countermeasures.
